Water Heater FAQs – Tank & Tankless
Associated Plumbers has repaired and replaced water heaters in Little Rock and Central Arkansas for more than 79 years. Below are answers to the questions we hear most often from homeowners.
How long do water heaters typically last?
Traditional tank water heaters usually last 8–12 years. Tankless units often last 15–20 years or longer when properly maintained. Hard water, lack of maintenance, and heavy use can shorten the life of either type.
What are the signs that my water heater needs repair or replacement?
Common warning signs include:
- No hot water or only lukewarm water
- Water that takes much longer than usual to heat
- Rumbling, popping, or banging noises
- Water leaking from the tank or connections
- Rusty or discolored water
- Higher-than-normal energy bills
If you notice any of these, call 501-666-9483 for a professional evaluation.
Should I repair or replace my water heater?
If the unit is still under 8–10 years old and the problem is a relatively inexpensive part (thermostat, element, or valve), repair is often the better choice. If the tank is leaking, the unit is near the end of its expected life, or repair costs approach the price of a new heater, replacement is usually more economical.
What is the difference between tank and tankless water heaters?
- Tank water heaters store a ready supply of hot water in an insulated tank (commonly 40–80 gallons). They have a lower upfront cost but can run out of hot water during heavy use and take up more space.
- Tankless (on-demand) water heaters heat water only when you need it. They provide continuous hot water when sized correctly, take up less space, and are generally more energy-efficient, but cost more to install and may require annual maintenance.
Are tankless water heaters worth it?
For many households, yes — especially if you want continuous hot water, lower long-term energy costs, and a longer-lasting unit. They do require a higher initial investment and proper sizing. Our licensed plumbers can evaluate your home’s hot water demand and help you decide.
Do tankless water heaters need special maintenance?
Yes. In areas with hard water (common in Central Arkansas), the heat exchanger should be descaled about once a year to prevent mineral buildup and maintain efficiency. Skipping this maintenance can reduce performance and shorten the unit’s life.
Can you replace my old tank water heater with a tankless model?
Yes. We regularly convert homes from tank to tankless systems. The job may involve upgrading gas lines, electrical service, or venting, depending on the existing setup and the new unit. We provide clear flat-rate pricing before any work begins.
How long does a water heater replacement take?
Most tank water heater replacements are completed in a few hours on the same day. Tankless installations can take longer if gas, electrical, or venting modifications are required. Our fully stocked service vans allow us to complete the majority of jobs in a single visit.
Do you offer flat-rate pricing?
Yes. Associated Plumbers provides transparent flat-rate pricing. You approve the price before we start any work — no surprise bills.
What brands do you install?
We install quality tank and tankless water heaters from major manufacturers. We will recommend options that fit your household size, fuel type (gas or electric), and budget.
Do you service both gas and electric water heaters?
Yes. Our licensed Master Plumbers (Arkansas licenses MP3112 and MP6367) repair and replace both gas and electric tank and tankless water heaters.
